CHAPTER 17
L ucretia rose early the following day after a nearly sleepless night. She had not been able to put away the encounter with the Duke the previous evening. Whenever she closed her eyes, she could see his face before her. His glorious smile that lit up his face, and his eyes which were so serious, yet so tender.
Her body shuddered every time she thought of the way he had touched her. The way he’d held her hand to examine it for injury and the way he’d held on to it even after attending to her cuts.
She knew he’d felt what she felt. She closed her eyes and pictured his hand on hers once more until she forced herself to come to her senses.
You did not come here to fall in love, Lucy. You came here to work. To ensure your future. Surely, falling for your employer is not the way to do that. Even if I am right and he feels what I feel, I am merely the governess. There is no future for us.
She rose and walked to the window. The rain had soaked the garden and the grey clouds still hung heavy in the sky. Certainly, Lord Henry would not be able to seek out the blackbird’s nest today, with or without the Duke.
She was about to turn away to get dressed when she saw two men pass by underneath her window. She leaned forward and recognized the Duke and his friend, Lord Winterton. They were in their hunting clothes. However, they were walking toward the stables.
She quickly dressed and made her way downstairs. It was too early for her to take breakfast, for most days she did not take breakfast until just before her lesson with Lord Henry.
Given that she had not eaten since last night and it was early yet, she decided to make her way into the kitchen to retrieve a piece of fruit to sate herself for the time being.
She made it only one floor down when the sound of two women arguing drifted towards her. To her dismay, she recognized Mary’s voice as one of them. The other, it should not have come as any surprise, was Molly’s. She broke into a run and rushed down the stairs, finding the two women standing in the hall in front of one of the unused guest chambers. Both were in their uniforms, and despite the early hour, were fully engaged in an argument.
When Molly saw Lucretia coming around the corner, she sighed dramatically.
“Of course, it is you. For whenever one of you is around, the other is never far behind. Like a pair of stray dogs you are, traveling in a pack.”
Lucretia ignored the insult. In recent weeks, Molly had become more and more overt with her distain for the both of them. With Mary showing no signs of abandoning her lessons with William, and Lucretia spending more time with the Duke, the maid appeared to feel even more threatened by them. Unfortunately, most of the other servants followed her lead.
